Rainwater Containers and Rainwater Harvesting: The Facts
Even though 50 percent of the Earth's surface is covered by water, only 2.5% is considered fresh or useable water. The rest is found in the form of salt water that is not drinkable nor useable for agriculture.
Even more stunning, of the fresh water that exists, the vast majority is unusable as part of glaciers and ice caps.
So, of the 2.5% of water that is fresh and potable (useable), only 3/10 of 1 percent is fresh water found in lakes, rivers and streams.
Unfortunately this is not the end of the story...much of this small amount of freshwater is drying up due to global warming and human's diverting its natural course. Other spots are becoming so contaminated that they cannot be used for human consumption.
The solution is keeping and harvesting our most faithful and abundant source of potable water: Rain. Changing our habits so that we keep rainwater in barrels and containers for harvesting when it is needed is a great first step. Rain harvests can help us protect our existing resources and save money at the same time!.
